When a GHD straightener gives up, it's often a small drama: these tools are expensive to buy (€130 to €220 new), people get attached to them, and many hairdressers and home users rely on them daily. Good news: in most cases, the fault is repairable for €40 to €80, in under an hour on the bench.
I regularly repair GHDs in Poitiers, Original, IV, V, Gold, Platinum, Helios. The same faults come back over and over, and almost none of them need the whole unit to be replaced.
The common GHD faults
Out of the hundreds of GHD straighteners I've seen pass through the workshop, the faults cluster around four issues:
- The straightener won't heat at all: indicator light blinking strangely or not coming on. This is the classic symptom of a blown thermal fuse.
- Only one plate heats up: the other stays cold, or lukewarm. Here too, it's almost always a thermal fuse (most models have one per plate).
- The swivel cord is damaged: cracked sheath, exposed wires visible at the handle exit. Dangerous to keep using, replace promptly.
- Broken hinge: the two plates no longer line up properly, the internal spring has given out. On some models (Platinum+, Helios) it's an easy-to-change sub-assembly.
More rarely: dead electronic board (usually after a fall or water exposure) or faulty temperature sensor.
If your GHD heats in fits and starts, smells of burning, or has cracked plates, stop using it immediately. A cracked plate can catch hair and the behaviour becomes unpredictable.
Dead heating element: how I diagnose
The "heating element" on a GHD is the element bonded under each ceramic plate. It's a robust part that rarely blows. When someone tells me "my heating element is dead", it's actually the thermal fuse that's blown in 8 cases out of 10.
The thermal fuse is a small safety component (in series with the heating element) that permanently cuts off as soon as temperature exceeds a threshold. Once blown, no current passes → the plate doesn't heat. It's sacrificed to prevent a fire.
My diagnosis with a multimeter, in ohms:
- 1Disassembly, screws hidden under the GHD logo and under the silicone pads. On Platinum/Gold/Helios models it's more delicate: the shell clips on firmly and you need a plastic spudger to avoid marking it.
- 2Measure the heating element directly at its terminals: should read between 25 and 60 ohms depending on the model. If it reads infinity, the element is genuinely dead (rare). If it reads a sensible value, we continue.
- 3Measure the thermal fuse: should read short-circuit (0 ohms). If it reads infinity, it's blown, a €1–3 part to replace. That's 80% of my GHD interventions.
- 4Test the swivel cord: continuity check on each conductor while flexing the cord. Any intermittent break means the cord is dead inside the sheath, even if the outside looks fine.
- 5Test the temperature sensor (thermistor): resistance should vary sensibly with the warmth of your hand. Very rarely faulty.
Once the diagnosis is in, I know exactly which part(s) to order. And the customer gets a precise quote before I buy anything.
What I replace (and what isn't worth it)
What I replace regularly:
- Thermal fuse: €1 to €3 per part, 30 minutes of work. The classic.
- Heating element (rarer): €15 to €25 per part depending on model. About an hour of work, because the ceramic has to be unbonded cleanly.
- Full swivel cord: €12 to €20 per part. Available for most common GHD models. Essential as soon as the sheath cracks.
- Hinge / spring: €5 to €15 depending on model. On some GHDs it's a complete sub-assembly (axle + spring).
What isn't worth it:
- Full electronic board on Platinum+ or recent Helios models: the board costs €60 to €90, plus labour, and you quickly hit the price of a new unit. I say so openly when we get there, often I suggest either a refurbished one or a new one if the budget allows.
- Cracked ceramic plates on older models (Original, IV): the parts are no longer produced, only mediocre generic compatibles remain. If the straightener is more than 8 years old, I'll say so honestly: not worth it.
- Straightener that fell in water: if the board has corroded, it's gone. We can try an isopropyl alcohol clean-up, but no guarantee.
Before ordering anything, I test the unit after repair for 10 to 15 minutes powered up empty, with thermal monitoring. No way I'm handing back a straightener that might fry again two weeks later.
Repair vs new: the value question
It's the first thing people ask me, and I always give an honest answer.
The simple rule: if the repair costs less than half the equivalent new unit, I recommend repairing. That's almost always the case for a thermal fuse or a swivel cord. It's less obvious for a dead electronic board on a recent high-end model.
And there's the environmental side: a repaired GHD is 200 to 400 g of plastic, metals and electronics that don't end up in landfill. Over the lifespan of a well-maintained unit (10 to 15 years), that's far from trivial.
For hairdressers and salons: I can arrange a bulk intake of several units at once with a guaranteed turnaround (typically 48 to 72 hours). Handy when you've got two or three GHDs in rotation and can't afford to be without one.
How to extend your GHD's lifespan
A few simple habits that genuinely make a difference, I can see it in the types of faults that come back:
- Never wrap it by the cord. That's the swivel cord's worst enemy. Each tight wrap snaps the internal copper strands one by one. After a few hundred uses, a fault is guaranteed. Put it down straight, or wrap the cord around the straightener without pulling it tight at the base.
- Always switch it off before storing. The vast majority of blown thermal fuses I see come from a straightener placed hot on its silicone mat, folded on itself, that kept heating in a position where the heat couldn't escape.
- Store it in its case (or a heat-resistant silicone pouch). Avoids knocks, and stops the cord from taking violent angles when the straightener gets shoved into a drawer.
- Clean the plates regularly with a soft damp cloth (never alcohol, it attacks the ceramic coating). Spray and product residue creates an insulating layer that forces the heating element to run hotter for longer.
- Avoid sudden power cuts: unplug it rather than yanking the cord. Voltage spikes aren't kind to the internal electronics.
With these habits, a good GHD easily lasts 8 to 12 years. Without them, you're looking at 3–4 years before the first serious fault.

A well-maintained GHD, repaired at the right time, is a tool that lasts 10 years and more. When you do the maths, it's far cheaper than buying a new one every 3 years, and that's before counting the waste avoided.
